kwentong centro

The adventure of a typical juvenile from a far away province that
found herself stuck in a trap namely Mindanao State University where
students are stereotyped as geniuses and entitled, and now has
to survive not just from its brutal standards but also from the
reality of having to endure the dorm life.

Centro: Home of the Boarders

Most of Mindanao State University’s students that aren’t originally from General Santos City thus lives from a far away province are often found temporarily settling at Brgy. Fatima, Centro-Uhaw, GSC, the barangay closest to the university and offers enough convenience to the boarders like walking distance carinderias, fruit stand, mini grocery store, internet shops, and etc.

Upon the stay of the boarders for a few years, tons of memories are made, not just inside their campus, but also in their new community. Most of them have probably experienced cramming their paper works to be printed on a nearby internet cafe by 5 AM in the morning, knocking on their friend’s boarding house to stay overnight as they got late and went past their curfew, going out with their squad to a certain kainan—chipping in for food and softdrinks then talk about their pabibo blockmates, and how some of them were caught cheating and such.

2 cups of memories in carinderia

“Asa ta mangaon?” a question that is probably heard from almost everyone sauntering at Centro starting from 6 PM—indecisive of where to eat because of all the quality eateries surrounding.

Sinigang, bistek, adobo, bicol express, name it! Centro could offer different delicacies from different carinderias. What’s more is that, the carinderia owners are not just known for their excellent cooking but also for their warmth and congeniality.

You’ll surely get a sight of boarders that are either too lazy to cook and wash the dishes or doesn’t have time and enough stocked food anymore, binging on their suking carinderia.

Who knows? You might also see boarders doing their window shopping (carinderia version) as they ogle at their favorite dish and low-key crying inside because they have an allowance shortage, probably because of too much notes to photocopy or perhaps they partied too much on the day they got their allowance, and now could only afford a pack of milo and a single biscuit.

3 kg of flop jokes in mini markets

Strolling at Centro, you’d probably bump into few mini markets. School supply stores and eateries are not the only highlights of the community, but also the walking distance fruit stalls and isdaan.

It’s not just the fish that seems fishy, and the corn as corny in these stalls, but also the chika, the banat and the jokes that you’ll overhear from the vendors and customers who picks up a certain product then throws their witty lines. So don’t go around wondering if you went to one of their mini markets and saw a person trying their hardest to hold their smile or laughter, they probably just heard an epic conversation.

Also, here’s a tip, most of the students you’d see walking in to those tiny spaces are not freshmen, why would they bother cooking if there are numbers of carinderias anyway?
